Our mission as a teaching studio is to create small group instruction for people at all levels of engagement with relief printmaking. The content of classes is highly individualized. The population coming to ABRAZOS PRESS ranges from curious, enthusiastic beginners, to professional artists looking to extend their aesthetic range into prints.
The 3 classes offered in early summer afford participants “short and sweet” experiences with printmaking that can be inspiring to many different types of artistic practice.
1.THE MIXED MEDIA PRINT: Woodcut, stencils and pronto plates- Oh MY!
Participants will use relief techniques of woodcut and stencils in combination with polyester lithographic plates (pronto plates) to create multi-layered prints. Pronto plates can be used to get many different types of marks from drawing with markers and ball point pens, to copying photographic imagery or text in laser copiers. Students can choose their emphasis and direction in pushing and pulling their prints in new ways. Pronto plates can be used with drawn, painted and photographic elements, as well as text. They can be multi-colored, and are a fascinating edition to printmaking, being “litho-lite” but very flat. Woodcut on the other hand lends surface dimension and has the possibilities of blind embossing, floating shapes and the satisfying activity of carving. Beginners welcome.
There are always options for concentrating JUST on woodcut/ relief printmaking or pronto plates .
DAYTIME CLASS: 5 Tuesdays : June 9,16,23,30,July 6
TIME: 9:30-1 PM
Cost: $250 plus materials bought as they are used (wood, polyester plates)
2. IMPROVISATIONAL WOODCUT
It’s like Jazz, but with sharp tools, wood, paper and ink. This most ancient printmaking technique honors the hand, the mark, and the wonderful process of carving, scratching and abrading wood to create imagery. Students will carve blocks that can be used alone or in conjunction with other blocks, stencils and masks. Tool maintenance and sharpening , along with printing techniques, and the modification of inks for degrees of transparency will be addressed. This is a unique way to work that can have the immediacy of collage, yet incorporates the inherent possibility of multiples and working in a series. Mixed media directions with pronto plates , stencil and masks will be taught based on student interest.
EVENING CLASS: Thursdays : June 11,18,25, July 2,9
Cost: $250 (plus wood block fee and students need to purchase carving tools)
3.PRINT, WAX, POKE AND STITCH: Dimensional , stitched prints
Waxed prints on Japanese paper are translucent , strong, flexible surfaces conducive to sewing into dimensional forms. OR, WAXED PRINTS can be used on their own with sewn and pierced elements to invigorate their surface perhaps creating surface tension. Students can bring prints, or create new ones . Embroidery and sewing techniques will be demonstrated, along with simple waxing procedures . Good for Bookmakers, 3-D mavens, and those curious to use their prints as materials for other projects.
