1.THE MIXED MEDIA PRINT: Woodcut, stencils and pronto plates- Oh MY!

Participants will use relief techniques of woodcut and stencils in combination with polyester lithographic plates (pronto plates) to create multi-layered prints. Pronto plates can be used to get many different types of marks from drawing with markers and ball point pens, to copying photographic imagery or text in laser copiers. Students can choose their emphasis and direction in pushing and pulling their prints in new ways. Pronto plates can be used with drawn,painted and photographic elements, as well as text. They can be multi-colored, and are a fascinating edition to printmaking, being “litho-lite” but  very flat.  Woodcut on the other hand lends surface dimension and has the possibilities of blind embossing, floating shapes and the satisfying activity of carving. Beginners welcome.

There are always options for concentrating JUST on woodcut/ relief printmaking or pronto plates .

DAYTIME CLASS: 5 Tuesdays : June 9,16,23,30,July 6

TIME: 9:30-1 PM

Cost: $250  plus materials bought as they are used (wood, polyester plates)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

2. IMPROVISATIONAL WOODCUT

It’s like Jazz, but with sharp tools, wood, paper and ink.  This most    ancient printmaking technique honors the hand, the mark, and the wonderful process of carving,scratching and abrading wood to create imagery.  Students will carve blocks that can be used alone or in conjunction with other blocks, stencils and masks. Tool maintenance and sharpening , along with printing techniques, and the modification of inks for degrees of transparency will be addressed. This is a unique way to work that can have the immediacy of collage, yet incorporates the inherent possibility of multiples and working in a series. Mixed media directions with pronto plates , stencil and masks will be taught based on student interest.

EVENING CLASS: Thursdays : June 11,18,25, July 2,9

Time: 6-9:30

Cost: $250 (plus wood block fee and students need to purchase carving tools)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3.PRINT, WAX, POKE AND STITCH: Dimensional , stitched prints

Waxed prints on Japanese paper are translucent , strong, flexible surfaces conducive to sewing into dimensional forms. OR, WAXED PRINTS can be used on their own with sewn and pierced elements to invigorate their surface perhaps creating surface tension.  Students can bring prints, or create new ones .  Embroidery and sewing techniques will be demonstrated,  along with simple waxing procedures . Good for Bookmakers, 3-D mavens, and those curious to use their prints as materials for other projects.

EVENING CLASS: Tuesday evenings : July 7,14,21,28

Time: 6-9:30

Cost: $215

Book collaboration with Cuban Artist Norberto Marrero

In 2004 Annie Silverman had the opportunity to travel along with Phyllis Ewen, to Havana,Cuba  to pick up an exhibition of prints organized by MIXIT Studios. While there she met Norberto Marrero and Janette Broussard, young printmakers with their own small printshop in Guaynabo, a beach community inthe environs of Havana.  Even though Norberto speaks no English, Annie he ‘bonded” through a love of surrealism and quirkiness in their prints. This past September, Janette and Norberto had an exhibition at the Cambridge Multi-cultural arts center.  Annie gave Norberto a small accordion book that she had printed with the aim of a collaboration ensuing. Janette translated. Astrid Martinez-Jones of Latin Art Space brought the book back to the Boston area later in the Fall.  Here is the result.  Norberto’s images are linocuts printed on very think Japanese paper and glued into Annie’s botanical woodblock printed images..IMG_1548IMG_1545IMG_1535IMG_1543IMG_1542
