There is a crispiness in the air. Schools are starting next week. FALL is a great time to try a new technique or media at ABRAZOS PRESS to prime your creative pump for the darker, shorter days ahead. Beginners are always welcomed and valued for their bravery and curiosity.
**NEW CLASS OFFERINGS:
1.THE LAYERED PRINT..(Live in the layers, not in the litter..Stanley Kunitz)
Join Annie as she breaks down her methods for creating richly layered prints awash in texture and colors. Several relief and planer printmaking techniques along with stencils, plate carving, polyester plate lithography and maybe letterpress printing on an etching press will be thrown into the mix.
6 Alternate Wednesday evenings: Oct.1,15, 29, Nov.12,19, Dec.3 TIME: 6-9:30
2. PRINT, WAX, POKE AND STITCH: Dimensional , stitched prints
Waxed prints on Japanese paper are translucent , strong, flexible surfaces conducive to sewing into dimensional forms. OR, WAXED PRINTS can be used on their own with sewn and pierced elements to invigorate their surface perhaps creating surface tension. Students can bring prints, or create new ones . Embroidery and sewing techniques will be demonstrated, along with simple waxing procedures . Good for Bookmakers, 3-D mavens, and those curious to use their prints as materials for other projects.
4 Sequential Tuesday evenings: Oct. 21,28,Nov.4,11 TIME: 6-9:30
3. IMPROVISATIONAL WOODCUT…like Jazz but with sharp tools and ink
1. Improvisational Woodcut : This most ancient printmaking technique honors the hand, the mark and the constructive/destruction of wood transformed by carving, scratching and abrading . Each carved block becomes a layer of information that can be combined with other blocks, stencils and masks to yield unique, contemporary results. The wood used is easy to cut and keeps fine detail. Tool maintenance and sharpening, ink modification , image transfer and printing techniques will be addressed. Improvisational woodcut can have the immediacy of collage, yet with the possibility of working in a series for which printmaking is ideal.
6 Alternate TUESDAY Mornings : Sept.23,Oct.7,21,Nov.4, 18, Dec.2 Time: 9:30-1
Cost: $300.00 (plus wood fee..students will also need carving tools)
4. The Mixed media Print: Woodcut, stencils and pronto plates- Oh MY!
Students can choose their emphasis and direction in pushing and pulling their prints in new ways. Pronto plates can be used with drawn, painted and photographic elements, as well as text. They can be multi-colored, and are a fascinating edition to printmaking, being “litho-lite” but they are very flat. Woodcut on the other hand lends surface dimension and has the possibilities of blind embossing, floating shapes and the satisfying activity of carving. (if you sensed that this was a similar class to the LAYERED PRINT, you were right!, but the classes are small and individually geared to student interests and needs so similar content will be involved with varying emphasis.)
ALTERNATE THURSDAY evenings :(with a change around Thanksgiving) DATES: Oct. 2, 16,30,Nov.6,20, Dec.4 TIME: 6-9:30
Cost: $300.00 (plus a fee for wood used . Students will need carving tools)
